April 13 Invitation to a Silent Walk for PeaceThe cherry blossoms are blooming again this year, but I don't feel like
cherry viewing parties. My heart always aches and is heavy.
Under the bombs, there is blood. Broken bodies. Voices crying out. Places
where people live day to day, have thoroughly been destroyed. In Iraq,
Afghanistan, Palestine.
My life continues, and while looking at the cherry I think.
Of you who on your last breath cried out "Why?"
My life as usual can only go on if I pretend I did not know.
What kind of cherry viewing can it be if we are coldly forgetting?
We are paying money for the bombs.
We are trying to ignore and forget.
At least we can remember you, dressed in black and holding your dead child,
remember those people who were killed.

One Peace Walk participant's thoughts
After 9.11.2001, I couldn't sit or stand still and so I participated in a
'demonstration' for the first time. I did not know what or how to act, but
one thing I did know was that "I myself am against war". So I joined the
Walk as one way to express this will.
The people I met on the Walk were kind-hearted people who said "Maybe our
walking the streets while shouting in large voices could lead to violence,
if it disturbs people." Instead of assuming that since it is a
protest of war, the cars and passersby should make way for the
'demonstration', Peace Walk Kyoto's approach has been to share our message
of peace to the people passing by.
When America started attacking Iraq, I despaired and felt powerless.
Why are people in Afghanistan having to die?
How many people in Iraq have to die?
What in the world are American soldiers dying for? I asked myself.
For what am I walking for? If we are unable to stop the war, then isn't this
useless? I thought real hard and I felt:
I want people to know that there are many people who are quietly protesting
the war. And I want this anti-war movement to be a reason for those people
who are fighting to ask in their own hearts, "Is it really alright to kill
people if it is war?" This is why we are walking.
That each step we walk, will help those fighting to take the first step
toward wishing for peace.
Won't you walk with us? Not with weapons or violence, but with compassion
for others, lets start a "revolution in the hearts" of those people who
fight.
*************
Because we are walking in silence, the signs we hold will be all the more
important. Though there will be ready made ones available, please feel free
to make your own sign that conveys your own message of peace.
We will have a sign making session before our walk.
Sunday April 13, 1 pm to 3 pm
At "Wings Kyoto" 3rd floor. (Nakgyo Seishonen katudo senta)
From 3 pm we will have our 'Relay Talk' at Misayama children's Park south of
"Wings Kyoto".
The Silent Walk will start at 4 pm, walking to Misayama children's Park -
Karasuma Street - ShijoKarasuma - Shijo Kawaramachi - ending at the City
Hall
Organized by PEACE WALK KYOTO
